“A train double” means a combination of vehicles consisting of a truck tractor, a semi-trailer and either an A-Dolly and a semi-trailer, or a full trailer that is attached to the foremost semi-trailer in a like manner as if an A-Dolly were used;(train double de type A)
“Act” means the Motor Vehicle Act;(Loi)
“A-dolly” means a converter dolly that is towed from one hitch on the centre line of the towing vehicle;(diabolo à simple timon)
“aerodynamic device” means a device, or devices, installed on the rear of trucks, trailers, or semi-trailers for the purpose of reducing wind resistance or aerodynamic drag but not for carrying cargo;(dispositif aérodynamique)
“axle group” means a single axle, a tandem axle, a tandem equivalent axle, a tridem axle, a tridem equivalent axle, a triaxle or a quadrem axle;(groupe d’essieux)
“axle group mass” means the total mass transmitted to the road by an axle group;(masse d’un groupe d’essieux)
“axle mass” means the mass transmitted to the road by one axle;(masse d’un essieu)
“axle spread” means the longitudinal distance between the centres of the extreme axles of an axle group;(écartement des essieux)
“B train double” means a combination of vehicles consisting of a truck tractor, a semi-trailer and a second semi-trailer towed by the lower half of a fifth wheel assembly mounted on the rear of the foremost semi-trailer;(train double de type B)
“box length” means, for a combination of vehicles, the longitudinal distance from the foremost point of all cargo-carrying units, including cargo, to the rearmost point of all cargo-carrying units, including cargo, exclusive of any extension in the dimension caused by auxiliary equipment or machinery at the front that is not designed or used for carrying cargo;(longueur de la caisse)
“C train double” means a combination of vehicles consisting of a truck tractor, a semi-trailer, a C-Dolly and a second semi-trailer;(train double de type C)
“C-dolly” means a converter dolly, with a frame rigid in the horizontal plane, that is towed from two hitches located in a horizontal transverse line on the towing unit, that precludes any rotation in the horizontal plane about the hitch points and that satisfies all requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations under the Motor Vehicle Safety Act (Canada) applicable to such devices;(diabolo à double timon)
“converter dolly” means a device that is designed and normally used to convert a semi-trailer to a full trailer;(diabolo convertisseur)
“dimension “A”” means the distance between the centre of the last axle on a semi-trailer and the centre of the first axle on a converter dolly or second trailer, as the case may be;(dimension « A »)
“drawbar” means a structure connected to the chassis frame of a trailer or converter dolly that includes a device for coupling to a hitch on a towing vehicle;(timon)
“drawbar length” means, when used with reference to a pony trailer, a full trailer or a converter dolly, the longitudinal distance from the centre of the device that attaches to a hitch on a towing vehicle to the centre of the lower half of the fifth wheel assembly or turntable;(longueur du timon)
“drive axle” means the axle or axle group that is or may be connected to the power source of a motor vehicle and that transmits power to the wheels;(essieu moteur)
“dry bulk product” means unpacked free flowing dry solids that are loaded without being boxed, bagged or hand stowed;(produits secs en vrac)
“effective rear overhang” means the longitudinal distance from the centre of the rear axle group on a truck or the geometric centre of the rear axle group on a trailer, to the rearmost point of the truck or trailer, including any cargo;(porte-à-faux arrière effectif)
“fifth wheel assembly” means a coupling device for the purpose of supporting and towing a semi-trailer, having a lower half that consists of a plate and locking jaws and that is mounted on the rear portion of a vehicle frame or the frame of a converter dolly, and having an upper half that consists of a plate and a kingpin fastened to the underside of the forward portion of the semi-trailer;(dispositif de sellette d’attelage)
“fifth wheel offset” means, when used with reference to a truck tractor, the longitudinal distance from the centre of the lower half of a fifth wheel assembly to the truck tractor turn centre;(décalage de la sellette d’attelage)
“front overhang” means the longitudinal distance from the front bumper of a vehicle, as installed by the manufacturer of the vehicle, to the foremost point on the vehicle, or to the cargo, whichever is the farther;(porte-à-faux avant)
“full trailer” means a vehicle designed and used so that its weight and cargo are carried on its own axles, and includes a combination of vehicles consisting of a semi-trailer and a converter dolly;(remorque classique)
“general freight” means any substance, article or thing conveyed in or on a vehicle; (marchandise générale)
“gross axle mass rating” means the value specified by a vehicle manufacturer as the cargo-carrying capacity of a single axle system of a vehicle, as measured at the tire-ground interfaces;(masse nominale brute sur l’essieu)
“gross vehicle mass” mean the total mass transmitted to the road by a vehicle or combination of vehicles, and the cargo;(masse brute du véhicule)
“gross vehicle mass rating” means the value specified by a vehicle manufacturer as the loaded weight of a single vehicle;(masse nominale brute du véhicule)
“hitch” means a device attached to a vehicle or converter dolly for the purpose of towing another vehicle or converter dolly, and includes the lower half of a fifth wheel assembly;(crochet d’attelage)
“hitch offset” means, when used with reference to a truck or semi-trailer equipped with a hitch for towing a trailer or converter dolly, the longitudinal distance from the turn centre of the truck or semi-trailer to the articulation point of the hitch;(décalage du crochet d’attelage)
“idle reduction technology” means an advanced truck stop electrification system, auxiliary power unit or other technology that

(a)
is used to reduce long-duration idling, and
(b)
allows for the main drive engine or auxiliary refrigeration engine to be shut down;
“interaxle spacing” means the longitudinal distance between the centre of the rearmost axle of an axle group and the centre of the foremost axle of the next axle group to the rear, within a vehicle or combination of vehicles;(entraxe)
“intercity bus” means a vehicle designed to carry more than ten passengers and equipped with facilities to allow extended travel without stopping;(autocar)
“kingpin” means the pin that couples a semi-trailer to the lower half of a fifth wheel assembly;(pivot d’attelage)
“kingpin setback” means the horizontal distance from the vertical axis through the centre of the kingpin to the farthest point on the semi-trailer, including cargo, ahead of the kingpin;(décalage du pivot d’attelage)

when used with reference to a full trailer, the external longitudinal distance from the foremost point of the cargo-carrying section of the full trailer, including cargo, to the rearmost point of the full trailer, including cargo, exclusive of any extension in length caused by equipment or machinery at the front that is not designed or used for transporting cargo,
(b)
when used with reference to a semi-trailer, the external longitudinal distance from the foremost point of the cargo-carrying section of the semi-trailer, including cargo, to the rearmost point of the semi-trailer, including cargo, exclusive of any extension in length caused by equipment or machinery at the front that is not designed or used for transporting cargo,
(c)
when used with reference to a pony trailer, the external longitudinal distance from the foremost point of the drawbar of the pony trailer or the foremost point of the cargo to the rearmost point of the trailer or cargo, and
(d)
when used with reference to a truck, the external longitudinal distance from the foremost point of the truck, including cargo, to the rearmost point of the truck, including cargo;
“lift axle” means an axle fitted with a device that enables the axle to be removed from contact with the ground by the vehicle operator or enables the operator to adjust the load carried by the axle;(essieu relevable)
“liquid bulk product” means unpacked free flowing liquids that are loaded in an approved tanker trailer without being placed in bottles, bags, boxes, barrels, small tanks, or in any other similar container, and without being hand stowed;(produits liquides en vrac)
“load equalization” means having mass on axle groups that does not vary by more than 1000 kilograms between adjacent axles in the axle group;(équilibrage de la charge)
“model year” means the year used to designate a discrete vehicle model irrespective of the calendar year in which the vehicle was actually produced, as indicated by the vehicle manufacturer in the vehicle identification number;(année de modèle)
“overall height” means the vertical distance between the highest point on a vehicle or combination of vehicles, including cargo, and the surface of the road;(hauteur hors tout)
“overall length” means the longitudinal distance from the foremost point of a vehicle or combination of vehicles, including cargo, to the rearmost point of the vehicle or combination of vehicles, including cargo;(longueur hors tout)
“overall width” means greatest overall transverse dimension of a vehicle or combination of vehicles including cargo;(largeur hors tout)
“pony trailer” means a vehicle that

has one axle group that is close to the centre of its chassis and that carries the preponderance of its weight and cargo, and
(b)
is towed by a drawbar rigidly attached to its structure;
“quadrem axle” means an axle group on a semi-trailer consisting of four consecutive axles;(essieu quadrem)
“raw forest product” means a wood product that has not been subject to processing, other than it being cut from the stump, the removal of its limbs or bark or it being cut into sections, and includes wood chips and forest by-products;(produit forestier brut)
“rear overhang” means the longitudinal distance from the rearmost point of the bed or body of a vehicle to the rearmost point of the cargo;(porte-à-faux arrière)
“self-steering axle” means an axle the wheels of which can be steered by forces generated between the tires and the road, or through mechanisms and linkages that operate independently of the operator, whether or not the self-steering mechanism is or can be rendered inoperative;(essieu autovireur)
“single axle” means one axle, or an axle group consisting of two axles having an axle spread of less than 1.2 metres, which axle or axles have the same number and size of tires on each side of each axle;(essieu simple)
“steering axle” means the axle of a vehicle that is steered under the control of the operator of the vehicle in order to control its direction of travel; (essieu directeur)
“Stinger Steer automobile or boat carrier” means a tractor and semi-trailer with the fifth wheel assembly mounted in a dropframe located behind and below the centre of the rearmost axle of the tractor;(porte-automobiles ou porte-bateaux de type « Stinger Steer »)
“tandem axle” means an axle group on a vehicle consisting of two consecutive axles, not including any lift or self-steering axles, that

are attached to the vehicle so as to achieve load equalization between the two axles, and
(b)
have the same number and size of tires on each axle;
“tandem equivalent axle” means a group of two consecutive axles within a vehicle, one of which is a lowered lift axle, that are

attached to the vehicle by identical pneumatic suspensions which achieve load equalization between axles, and
(b)
fitted with the same number and size of tires on each axle;
“tandem steering axle” means an axle group on a vehicle consisting of two consecutive axles, not including any lift or self-steering axles, that

are attached to the vehicle so as to achieve load equalization between the two axles,
(b)
have the same number and size of tires on each axle, and
(c)
are both steered under the control of the operator of the vehicle in order to control its direction of travel;
“tire load rating” means the maximum load a tire is rated to carry at a given inflation pressure, as determined by the manufacturer and stamped on the side of the tire at the time of manufacture;(capacité nominale d’un pneu)
“tire width” means the width of a tire, as customarily measured and rated by manufacturers of motor vehicles and tires, that is stamped on the tire at the time of its manufacture;(largeur du pneu)
“track width” means the width of an axle across the outside faces of the outer tires measured at any point above the lowest point of the rim;(largeur de roulement)
“tractor semi-trailer” means a combination of vehicles consisting of a truck tractor and a semi-trailer;(tracteur et semi-remorque)
“triaxle” means an axle group on a trailer consisting of three consecutive axles, one being a lift axle or a self-steering axle, that

are the only axles attached to the trailer in a manner achieving load equalization among all three axles, and
(b)
have the same number and size of tires on each axle;
“tridem axle” means an axle group on a vehicle consisting of three consecutive axles, not including any lift axle or self-steering axle, that

are equally spaced within the vehicle and are attached to the vehicle in a manner achieving load equalization among all three axles, and
(b)
have the same number and size of tires on each axle;
“tridem drive axle” means a drive axle composed of a tridem axle in which each axle of the tridem axle transmits tractive power to its wheels;(essieu moteur tridem)
“tridem drive tractor” means a truck tractor equipped with a tridem drive axle;(tracteur moteur tridem)
“tridem equivalent axle” means an axle group on a vehicle that is made up of three consecutive, equally spaced axles within a vehicle and that has

all lift axles lowered,
(b)
the same number and size of tires on each axle, and
(c)
each of its axles attached by identical pneumatic suspensions that automatically provide load equalization;
“truck-full trailer combination” means a combination of vehicles consisting of a truck and a full trailer;(camion et remorque classique)
“truck-pony trailer combination” means a combination of vehicles consisting of a truck and a pony trailer;(camion et remorque semi-portée)
“turn centre” means the geometric centre of the axle group on a semi-trailer or pony trailer or the geometric centre of the rear axle group on a truck, truck tractor or full trailer, as the case may be;(centre de virage)
“turntable” means a device at the front of a full trailer that permits articulation of the front axle or axle group on the full trailer; (plaque tournante)
“vehicle identification number” means a number consisting of Arabic numerals, Roman letters, or both, that the manufacturer assigns to the vehicle for identification purposes;(numéro d’identification du véhicule)
“warning flag” means a square flag of red or orange colour with sides that are at least 400 millimetres long;(drapeau d’avertissement)
“wheelbase” means

when used with reference to a full trailer, the longitudinal distance from the centre of the turntable of the full trailer to the full trailer turn centre,
(b)
when used with reference to a semi-trailer, the longitudinal distance from the kingpin of the semi-trailer to the semi-trailer turn centre,
(c)
when used with reference to a pony trailer, the longitudinal distance from the centre of the hitching device on the pony trailer to the pony trailer turn centre, and
(d)
when used with reference to a truck tractor, the longitudinal distance from the centre of the steering axle of the truck tractor to the geometric centre of the drive axle group.
